Required Courses Course Descriptions

Carlow University's chemistry program prepares students for rewarding careers in a variety of fields, ranging from industry to academic to government. The program not only provides a strong background in each of the four important subdisciplines of chemistry -- Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry -- but it also maintains a strong focus on research and laboratory skills. Students interested in pursuing advanced studies in graduate or professional school are also well-served by chemistry's well-rounded curririculm.

In addition to the program's traditional classroom and laboratory courses, chemistry also provides further skill enhancement through support course requirements in mathematics and physics, as well as a senior experience that may consist of an independent research project.

Chemistry majors who plan to seek employment in nontraditional areas can choose from a wide range of emphases, including biology, marketing and management, technical communications, or math and computer science. Students interested in teaching at the high school level may also opt for an emphasis in secondary education that leads to a degree in chemistry with teaching certification.
