School PoliciesNursing policies are explained more fully in the School of Nursing Undergraduate Student Handbook. Refer to it for specific, complete information.

The following are some selected summaries:

• Students must earn a minimum grade of “C” (2.0) in each of the prerequisite and corequisite support courses for the major and all major courses within the time frame designated in the curriculum guide.

• Students must attain a minimum GPA of 3.0 prior to enrolling in the first clinical nursing course. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 each semester. A “pass” must be achieved in each clinical component. Policies are in place for the student who does not achieve acceptable academic achievement.

• A person convicted of any felony may be prohibited from licensure by the state at any time.

• Students must achieve a score of 85% on vocabulary and math exams, and 77% on the critical reasoning exams by mid October of the first semester of their sophomore year.

• If the program of studies is interrupted, re-entry at a later time is dependent upon the curriculum, availability of class space and completion of the procedure. Refer to the School of Nursing Student Handbook.

• A policy is in place for the minimal Essential Cognitive and Physical and Emotional Requirements that must be met. Refer to the School of Nursing Student Handbook.

• A student may repeat a given nursing course only once. A maximum of one nursing course at each level may be repeated.

• All 200 level nursing courses must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” before progressing into 300 level nursing courses. Similarly, all 300 level nursing courses must be completed with a minimum grade of “C” before progressing into 400 level nursing courses. Students must have successfully completed all Senior Level nursing courses before proceeding into NU 411 Practicum at the end of the Senior year.

• In order to successfully complete the theory portion of all clinical courses (e.g., NU 2061, NU 3081, NU 4091, etc.), the student must achieve a cumulative grade on tests of 75% or higher and a cumulative grade on non-test course work (e.g., papers, presentations, etc.) of 75% or higher.

• Statute of Limitations: Students must successfully complete all requirements for the baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN or RN/BSN) within a period of eight (8) academic years, excluding an approved leave of absence, from the time of initial matriculation at Carlow University and six (6) academic years, excluding an approved leave of absence, from the time of taking the first course in clinical nursing.

• In compliance with the State Board of Nursing regulations and policies of clinical agencies, students are required yearly to pass a physical exam. They must maintain liability insurance, immunizations, CPR certification and Basic First Aid Certification throughout the clinical portions of the program.

• Each semester in the clinical courses, students must demonstrate mastery level competency in math / drug calculations to progress into the subsequent semester or proceed to graduation.

• Basic nursing majors are required to take a computerized nursing achievement test at the end of each clinical nursing course. Prior to graduation, they must also complete a diagnostic nursing comprehensive computerized examination in preparation for the NCLEX-RN.
